Steven Weitzman’s career in wood sculpture and carving is notable and decorated. In 1985, Weitzman gained wide international recognition for his wooden sculpture “Caretakers Tree,” dedicated at the United Nations’ 40th Anniversary Celebration in New York City. In 1989, Friends of the National Zoo and the Smithsonian Institution, commissioned Weitzman to create a 30′ sculpture. This sculpture can be found at the entrance of the National Zoo in Washington, DC. Hand carved from a 30-foot-tall white oak, this wood art work pays tribute to the many volunteers of the zoo. Approximately four million people observed the artist at work during the two years it took to carve the white oak.
