Weathering Steel

2017

This impressive, multi-medium public art installation for the Sabino Canyon Road to Kolb Road Interchange project includes numerous structures, effects and materials including, a weathering steel sculpture, CMU-block sound barrier wall, and the Airmen Memorial Bridge, including the elegant parapet design and the cast-concrete approach markers. The Walk-Thru is an exciting interactive sculpture that serves as a portal and transition point from the asphalt pedestrian/bike trail to the concrete sidewalk leading to Morris K. Udall Regional Park. Cut into each weathering steel band is an abstract design inspired by indigenous American Indian pottery. The ribbons were installed in an abstract formation to create a visually pleasing rhythm that echoes the rise and fall of Tucson’s mountainous terrain. During the day, the Walk-Thru projects patterned shadows onto the sidewalk, which constantly change with the position of the sun. At night, colored, programmable RGB LED lights are projected onto the sculpture creating a dynamic and dramatic nighttime experience for area pedestrians and bicyclists.
