THE AIRMEN MEMORIAL BRIDGE

THE AIRMEN MEMORIAL BRIDGE

This impressive, multi-medium public art installation for the Sabino Canyon Road to Kolb Road Interchange project includes numerous structures, effects, and materials including, a weathering steel sculpture, CMU-block sound barrier wall, and the Airmen Memorial Bridge, including the elegant parapet design and the cast-concrete approach markers.

The Airmen Memorial Bridge and faceted window parapet design are intended to open the bridge to the surrounding landscape of the Pantano Wash and Mullins Land Fill. The low parapet wall and the “windows” give the bridge a sense of lightness as if floating across the stark Wash below. The patterns on the approach markers located at each end of the bridge are inspired by indigenous American Indian pottery.
