LA CHOLLA BOULEVARD BRIDGE

LA CHOLLA BOULEVARD BRIDGE

Tucson, AZ.

2014

The La Cholla Signature Bridge project has garnered numerous industry awards—five within the first six months of its completion—many of them recognizing the successful collaboration of all team members involved. Weitzman’s goal in designing the aesthetic enhancements for this 600-foot-long bridge, nestled within the rustic Canyon del Oro Wash, was to make the bridge feel like an extension of the landscape rather than a structure imposed upon it.

The parapet, railing, and sidewalk designs reflect the colors, textures, and atmosphere of the surrounding environment without being overly literal. A custom-designed railing evokes the seasonal movement of water through the wash below. Cholla cactus form liner patterns are dramatically presented on the interior face of the parapet for pedestrians and commuters to enjoy. This exploration of motion, combined with the incorporation of graceful curves, helps transition the viewer from the built environment to the natural one beneath the bridge.
