American Elm

1986

Carved from a 200-year-old American Elm on the grounds of the United Nations’ headquarters in New York City, this sculpture was dedicated for the United Nation’s 40th Anniversary celebration in 1984 by its former UN Secretary General. The Caretakers, which took over six months to carve, is a powerful symbol of the world’s early recognition that the future stewardship of the planet and its care rests in the hands of all races of youth and their obligations to the environment and future generations.
