ARMILLARY SPHERE

ARMILLARY SPHERE

Chevy Chase, MD.

14’ x 14’ x 14’

Bronze

2002

The celestial sphere incorporates astrological symbols in relief on the outside of the meridian band; on the interior, Roman numerals reveal the time of day through shadows generated by the sun’s rays, including a second set of numerals representing daylight savings time, 12 seagulls showing that time flies, a lightning bolt attached to the top of the gnomon, all nestled on a cast stone cloud sitting in the “universe” of black galaxy granite.

This interactive urban environment is comprised of three main components: 1) a 34-foot clock fountain that refers to future time, 2) a 14-foot bronze Armillary Sphere that alludes to ancient time, and 3) FOTERA concrete sidewalk bands and text panels that reflect on the ephemeral nature of time.

The custom clock fountain conveys time using roman numerals and vertical and concentric waterspouts that respond to the changing minutes and hours of the day. The celestial sphere incorporates astrological symbols in relief on the outside of the central band; on the interior, Roman numerals reveal the time of day through shadows generated by the sun’s rays.

The engraved text panels are interspersed throughout adjacent sidewalksto further unify this urban environment.
