Bridges & Highways

Norman, Oklahoma
2011

The SH-9 West Bridge exhibits a bold agricultural presence with giant life-like ears of corn spanning the parapet and piers and waves emanating from the corn and flowing out into the wing walls signify the irrigated running water that feeds this essential crop. Also, four Chickasaw iconographs are cast into each pier bullnose: the Logo of the Chickasaw Cultural Center; the Spiral which symbolizes the wind, depicting life’s journey from birth to the afterlife; the “Sacred Eye” icon suggesting an omnipotent creator and how the Chickasaw view the world and, finally, the Sun symbol, to remind of the renewal of life as the sun sets and then hope for the light of tomorrow when it rises again.
