23RD STREET BRIDGE
Prince George’s County, MD
2003
The 23rd Street Parkway Bridge, which marks the gateway between Washington, D.C., and Prince George’s County, celebrates the white oak—the state tree of Maryland. This striking vehicular and pedestrian bridge includes two 150-foot cast-in-place parapet walls and two 6-foot cast-in-place concrete columns. Each column features a white oak leaf in 2-inch raised relief and is capped with a heroic-scale white oak acorn.
The interior faces of the parapet walls were formed using simulated-stone liners, while a continuous leaf motif runs along the top edge of each parapet, unifying the design with a rhythmic botanical detail.
