American Elm

1986

Carved from a 200-year-old American elm on the grounds of the United Nations headquarters in New York City, this sculpture was dedicated in 1984 by a former secretary-general as part of the UN’s 40th anniversary celebration. The Caretakers, completed over the course of six months, is a powerful symbol of global awareness. It reflects the understanding that the planet’s future rests in the hands of young people of all races.
