DC’s ‘Mayor for Life’ artist Steven Weitzman to attend dedication for latest project in Gaithersburg
Gaithersburg, MD— Jul. 16, 2019 — The City of Gaithersburg welcomes its newest art installation created by Steven Weitzman – local artist, innovator, thought leader and transportation designer from Brentwood, Maryland. Aptly named ‘Innovator Park,’ this pedestrian facility and public art installation includes quotes attributed to artists, innovators, authors and musicians etched into stone pavers enhanced by colorful concrete treatments and landscaping. This park environment offers a respite area for both visitors and community members to enjoy a quiet space away from the usual activity of downtown. When asked about his approach to the design of the park, Weitzman describes the experience as a “one-on-one conversation between the viewer and these innovators.”
Dedication of Innovator Park
The new installation will be dedicated by Mayor Jud Ashman at 10 a.m. on July 17 in Olmstead Park, located between Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar restaurant and the townhomes along Crown Park Avenue. A kid-friendly art activity will follow the dedication.
Weitzman is well renowned for his work throughout the country. Local projects of significant note include his 8’ tall heroic-sized bronze sculpture of Washington DC’s beloved “Mayor for Life,” Marion S. Barry, Jr. on display outside of the John A. Wilson building on Pennsylvania Avenue; his bronze sculpture commemorating Frederick Douglass installed within the United States’ Capitol Emancipation Hall; and his FOTERA concrete mural ‘Chesapeake Journey’ located in the central plaza of Washington’s National Harbor.
