Steven Weitzman Process - Glass

glass

In the third century BCE, the Ancient Egyptians invented the process of heating silica, soda and lime to create molten glass. By 1500 BCE, this process was utilized for glass vessels and art objects. Weitzman Studios, Inc. ("WSI") uses two main methods: glass blowing and pate de verre. In the pate de verre process, glass granules mixed with a binder are poured into a mold and then fired in an annealer, an insulated box that allows the glass to cool at a controlled rate in the shape of the mold. This cold cast technique allows the mold, which produces the form, to be carefully shaped prior to the glass making process. WSI experiments with the incorporation of copper and bronze into the form during this casting process. Examples of this experimentation include "Fetish" and "Bound Man".
